Tobacco Module

This module provides a more comprehensive picture of tobacco use and attitudes, and – while this module is no longer required for TUPE grant recipients – it enhances the survey’s value for the California state Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program.

This module assesses a wider range of tobacco-related behaviors and attitudes in greater depth, and provides program-related data, including peer norms, approval, and behavioral intentions.

School Climate Module

To assess school climate more extensively, this module assesses in more depth issues of academic rigor and supports, respectful relationships and cultural sensitivity, the relevance of classroom lessons, student learning motivation and classroom involvement, discipline and enforcement of rules, and the quality of facilities maintenance. Developed for use in California’s Safe and Supportive Schools Project Survey, this module enhances the ability of users to make comparisons of Cal-SCHLS student, staff, and parent survey data on school climate in order to guide school improvement efforts.

Drug Free Communities (DFC) Module

Approved for Drug Free Communities (DFC) and Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act (STOP ACT) grantees, this 13 question supplemental module (for middle & high school) is approved by ICF for meeting their reporting requirements with CSAP/ONDCP.

AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) Module

This module consists largely of additional items from the California Student Survey (CSS) relating to AOD use-related items were derived from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Less school-specific than the Core, it includes questions about frequency of AOD use and related problems. It can help provide a better understanding of these issues and offers greater comparability to state norms.

Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Module

Building Healthy Communities Grants. These grants provide services to schools as part of an ongoing effort to help children grow up in healthy, strong, supportive environments.

CalMHSA Module

This expanded version of the student survey is designed for districts interested in assessing their schools’ Learning Conditions in more depth. It includes an additional section that collects data from the CHKS School Climate Module, the Resilience Module and a few items on School Based Health Centers. The questions gauge five constructs:

  1. Support for Learning
  2. Positive Peer Relationships (anti-bullying related)
  3. Respect for Diversity
  4. Community and home based assets
  5. Internal assets (problem solving, empathy)
