CHKS Standard Workshop Presentations
These are free trainings conducted monthly by teleconference. Download and print or save the presentation to your computer.
- Administration Workshop (ppt). For use in conjunction with the free Administration Trainings conducted via teleconference. Discusses survey administration procedures and planning, including survey requirements and consent options.
- CHKS Data Appreciation Workshop (ppt). For use in conjunction with the free Data Appreciation Trainings conducted via teleconference. Discusses survey items, RYDM scoring, data analysis, and reporting your results to others.
- Using Your Results for School Improvement Workshop (ppt). For use in conjunction with the free School Improvement Trainings conducted via teleconference. Learn how to use the data for your school improvement initiatives and efforts. - Using Your Results for School Improvement Workshop. Learn how to use the results from your CHKS & CSCS Reports for school improvement initiatives and efforts. School climate and connectedness affect a wide range of youth outcomes including academic achievement, risk-taking behavior, and wellbeing.
- Closing the Achievement Gap (CTAG) Workshop. Effectively use the CTAG workbook with your CHKS and CSCS data to improve schools and help close the achievement gap.

- Resilience & Youth Development PowerPoint (pdf). Forty-three slides will take you through the theoretical framework behind the RYDM, the meaning of the RYDM scores, and the relationships between risk, resilience, and achievement.
Risk, Resilience, and Academics
These presentations highlight the relationships between Health, Risk Behavior, Resilience, and Academics.
- Student Health Risk, Resilience, and Academic Performance (ppt). This presentation explains the findings of the analyses Dr. Thomas Hanson conducted on the relationship of health risks and resilience, as measured by the CHKS, to differences in standardized test scores. The final report, Ensuring That No Child Is Left Behind, has now been published and is being distributed to district superintendents and SDFSCA coordinators throughout the state. Talking points and background information for each slide are included, enabling anyone to make a presentation on the study results. This research was supported by the Stuart Foundation.
- Leaving No Child Behind: The Relationship of Academic Achievement to Health-Risk Behaviors and Resilience (ppt). Greg Austin's presentation at the National Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools Conference, Washington, D.C., on August, 2005.
- Advocating for Coordinated School Health (ppt). Sean Slade’s presentation to the Greater Bay Area Coordinated School Health Leadership Institute, held at Stanford University on October, 2006. The presentation highlights the relationships between health, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) use, connectedness, and academics. It promotes findings of the CHKS as a tool for advocating for Coordinated School Health.

- New Source of CHKS Funding Announced (pdf). The California Departments of Education and Alcohol and Drug Programs are pleased to announce a new plan for conducting the 2011-12 state-mandated Biennial California Student Survey as part of normal local administration of the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS). Districts and schools agreeing to participate in the Biennial Survey will receive substantial incentives that will reduce the cost and burden of conducting their own district CHKS. Participation only involves including a short module of questions about substance use to the CHKS survey. Click here for more info.
- New 2011-2012 School Year Survey Materials. 2011-2012 CHKS and CSPS survey materials (such as Memoranda of Understanding, instruments, guidebooks, instructions, consent forms, etc.) are available to download now. CSCS materials will be available shortly. If you have any questions, please contact your Regional Center, or call the Cal-SCHLS helpline at (888) 841.7536.
- CA Healthy Kids Survey Data Helping Redondo Beach Schools improve API. Schools in Redondo Beach, CA report that recent increases in API scores are linked to using CHKS data to help them identify areas of strength and weakness in how they support their students' social, emotional, and physical development. The district uses multiple indicators, including CHKS data, to measure student success, and believes that improved academic performance is a result of focusing on educating the whole child. - New Cal-SCHLS Surveys Administration Info and Pricing for 2011-2012 (pdf). As part of our continuing efforts to respond to the needs of California students, schools, and families, several major innovations in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and the California School Climate Survey (CSCS) for staff have recently occurred.
